There are differing ideas on meditation music and if it can in reality help you to go into the state of meditation or if it simply hinders. I think that this depends a lot on the type of meditation you are attempting or to be more exact on which method or technique you will be using to get into the state of meditation.
There are the more firm approaches which can be found in the more traditional schools such as zen or to a certain extent the traditional Buddhist meditations. The objective of these meditations is to enter into a state of nothingness and the use of meditation music is not really that fitting here. If any thoughts emerge whilst meditating then you need to simply allow the thought to rise, not pay any attention to them and let them just float away.
Other forms of meditation that are just a little more modern require that you get centered and relaxed. These methods are really conducive to the use of meditation music. You will find that this type of mediation essentially benefits very much from the use of music to accompany it as it can make it easier for you to disconnect from the outside world.
Guided meditations are also popular as of late with a narration recorded over gentle, calming meditation music. These can be a great way to enter into the mediative state for beginners as you don’t really need to do anything except pay attention to the voice and the music, follow the instructions and allow yourself to become engrossed in the world of fantasy that is being created.
There are even some forms of quite radical mediation techniques like those presented by Osho that include dancing as well as invigorating movement so as to go into the state of mediation. With these methods the use of meditation music is crucial.
There is a lot of information on the Internet on how to meditate but for more details on the music side of it then check out my Meditation Music website.
