Chanting And Changing Your Brain

by Mind Power on September 1, 2010

The spiritual practice of chanting can be a form of meditation.  A very powerful form of meditation that utilizes the voice as a instrument is chanting.

Chanting is an instrument for change, transformation, for connection, for healing and for release and also for the classical meditation of objective of concentration, one pointedness.

The act of chanting a mantra will create certain types of changes in the brain.  A mantra is a word with or without meaning, or a phrase or an entire song or verse.  Often it will be repeated for a set amount of time or number of chants.  It depends on the tradition of the chanting practice.

This very act of the repetition of chanting the mantra creates changes.  Recently it was discovered by science with the use of MRI technology that particular changes occur inside the brain with particular meditation activities.

The scientists found that there is particular firing of the neural patterns that take place when meditation is practiced.  And these firing patterns are different to the everyday firing patterns.  When meditation is practiced the firing patterns that are observed are those that generate an increase in the sense of well being and positive emotions.

The famous yogi’s frequently said that chanting and meditation is a way to create “new grooves” in ones mind

The latest scientific findings seem to show now that this is the case.

When one practices a meditation and chanting is a meditation, if practiced in a particular way with method, that indeed the brain can be changed and “remolded” to use neuro science lingo.  These firing patterns that occur with meditation practices are associated more with the positive emotions and sensations.

Perhaps the ancient yogi’s indeed had it correct when they said aeons ago that chanting creates new grooves in the mind.  So if your are looking to change your mind and brain, why not try chanting?
